Description
Ever wonder if coffee can grow in the continental US? This map answers that question by diving deep into the possibilities of domestic coffee cultivation. Originating from my curiosity about where coffee comes from, my research expanded to cover climate zones, university research projects, and farmer networks within the US.
While there are plenty of amazing maps showing where coffee comes from across the world, this one focuses on growing coffee in the US. Unlike global coffee maps like this one, this one narrows the focus to local prospects. With recent supply chain disruptions highlighting our fragile access to beloved goods, the question arises: how will we get coffee if international trade falters due to politics, climate change, or conflict? How will small business coffee shops (including the ones on the Phoenix Coffee Map) survive?
The research for this map led me to university agricultural projects, California farming partnerships and a look at our many climate zones. Did you know that there are instruments researchers use to observe the behavior of roots in plants? I found out a wealth of information about the specific growing conditions needed for coffee. And, I learned how climate change might make some areas in the United States MORE conducive to growing coffee.
In this map, I also speculate on areas that I think might be able to grow coffee, based on their climate and temperature ranges. As always, this is my non-expert opinion but it’s fun to think about what’s possible!
Supporting existing coffee-growing regions remains crucial. Keeping a healthy shade canopy is a big part of this! Explore the potential of growing coffee in the US and gain insights into its future with this meticulously researched map.
